Outback - The Barndens
 |
I was expecting... just flat, open nothing, I was really
surprised that
the desert was actually quite
green
at the time.

At the end of the day we always got these
magnificent sunsets
and we did wonder why it was we didn't
notice them when we were at home, were they more spectacular
because we were in the outback?

You just stop hurrying and you stop thinking
ahead weeks, you just think for the day, and
you just enjoy
being there
and relaxing, and just taking in as much
as you possibly can while you're there.

Experiencing just that beauty of the place, and
knowing just how different it
is from here, you become very protective of that,
so that when you hear about people wanting to do something
to the land like sinking another mine or something,
you think, 'Oh no not there, it can't be there, it's
so beautiful", but before I would have thought, 'Oh
well, it's only desolate land out there, so what does
it matter?' And that's changed totally.

Quite bare and lonely, and you start
to connect with it,
it's sort of like
you live there.

I think you get a better understanding
of the indigenous people who live there, and you feel
the land is just so beautiful there, and you understand
why it's so special to them. And it makes you proud
to be Australian there as well... you often hear about
being proud to be an Australian, but you never really
experience it, and then
all of a sudden
you realise, well, it's my country as well.
