City Aboriginal - Tom

I'm a Wandarrlung Mara person
who was born at Ngukurr, land of the Ngalakan, Ngandi
and Alawa people, and who are my in-laws, and my name
is Bungarl, that's me, Bungarl.

I'm very proud of my name, it comes from
my clan group which is from my grandmother country in
Numbulwar, and this group is Murrongun people, Dhumbal,
the Morning Star,
and these are my
name, my people.

Sometimes I hear myself mumbling down
my corridor, singing these songs, crying about my footsteps,
all that sort of thing,
and it only leads
back to that country
you know, and here I am in Melbourne.

I know I have to do this, and the sacrifice we have
to pay sometimes, to detach yourself
away from your family
to gain education, and when I'm older, and things like
that, and I learn, to go back, and hopefully not too
late, to share with my people what I've learnt.

In some parts of St. Kilda there are
these beautiful little spots, and I went to use this
place to do my prayers, or to talk to my ancestors,
or sing to myself,
but borrowing
this gr
ound,
and because it was n area... an environment
where I can identify where I would go, sort of, when
I'm back home in my country.
