Andy Alberts

"That's the power of music, people will listen to
the song."
Andy Alberts is a Gunditjmara singer songwriter born one of six
children at Framlingham Aboriginal mission. He grew up with his
family on the settlement, located near Warrnambool, in South-Western
Victoria.
After leaving school at fourteen, Andy worked in a local factory
and at the Warrnambool hospital as well as fruit picking. He has
also been an administrator at the local Aboriginal cooperative.
He grew up surrounded by music with his sisters and brothers playing
guitar and singing from an early age. Andy started playing guitar
at 12 years old, learning from watching members of his family and
friends play.

In his early twenties, Andy began to write songs. Initially these
songs were about love and loss, growing into broader concerns as
he matured.
Andy is inspired to tell the stories of his people, their struggles,
their celebrations and their histories. He admires Goanna Band,
particularly the song Solid Rock as it made him start to sit up
and think about his music. Other artists such as Bart Willoughby
from No Fixed Address and Joe Geia were also inspirational in Andy's
growth as an acclaimed songwriter. These artists pointed the way
forward, providing a pathway for his development as a musician.
