Richard Frankland - Music

Richard began playing music at the age of twelve and wrote his
first song at thirteen. In 1983 he enlisted in the Army where he
joined the military band (The First Battalion Royal Australian Regiment).
With this band Richard initially played flute and saxophone, and
was later to do vocals at numerous performances. With the First
Battalion Royal Australian Regiment he toured extensively through
North Queensland.
In 1988 Richard joined a Koorie rock and roll band known as Interaction
and played saxophone and sung vocals. In 1989 he formed Djaambi
which is a ten-piece Koorie/Non-Koorie band. The band and Richard's
music featured in three of his films.
Djaambi toured internationally, specifically the headline act at
the 5th Pacific Island Festival New Caledonia. The band was also
the opening act for Prince on his 1992 Australian tour, recorded
with Angry Anderson and performed with Mark Seymour and Louis McManus.
Richard
has written over seventy original works. Including "Malcolm Smith"
which is performed by Tiddas and has been recorded on their album
'Sing About Life'. "Malcolm Smith" was performed on the National
TV Show "Blackout" in 1994. This episode won a United Nations Peace
Award.
During 1992/3 he was the National Consultant with the Australian
Contemporary Music Development Company Ltd (AUSMUSIC). Richard was
contracted by DEET to develop the Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander
Employment Strategy into the Music Industry.

In 1993 he jointly coordinated the Songlines Project at South-West
College of TAFE (Warrnambool) with his Song writing partner Anthony
Norris of the Black Sorrows. The Songlines Project derived from
the Employment Strategy and is in place to develop Aboriginal Control
on Aboriginal product within the Music Industry. In 1993 Richard
again toured Djaambi
through New Caledonia attending and performing in Yate and Noumea.
Richard also recorded Yesterdays Dream for a Songlines Music Aboriginal
Corporation compilation CD
During 1995/96 Richard recorded over sixteen songs for his debut
CD titled Down Three Waterholes Road which was released in Australia
through Festival/Larrikin in September 1997. Down Three Waterholes
Road has received extensive airplay on Indigenous and community
radio stations. Wa Warrinor featured on Radio National throughout
the months of October and November

In 1998 Richard performed at Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff
Music Festival, Brunswick Street Festival (broadcast live on 3RRR)
