Join in NAIDOC celebrations around Australia - July 8-15
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Week begins,
each year, on Aboriginal Sunday, which is the second Sunday in July.
It is a time for all Australians to celebrate and share in the celebrations
with the oldest living culture in the world. NAIDOC stems from a
silent protest in Sydney in 1938 when Indigenous people reacted
to the 150-year celebrations of Australia. The Council of Churches
first celebrated Aboriginal Sunday in 1941 and in 1955 proposed
that additional activities should be included. This eventually occurred
in 1957 when the then NADOC committee planned and conducted weeklong
celebrations in major centres around Australia. In 1989 NADOC changed
its name to NAIDOC to include Torres Strait Islander people. It
is now the most recognised and celebrated Indigenous event.
This year's theme 'Treaty: Let's Get It Right' reflects the growing
push for the establishment of a treaty process through extensive
consultation with Australians.
