Sharing Family History
Read the overview of Australia's migration history. In which of
these waves of migration did the members of your family arrive?
Look at the time-line in the Land Issues section. What were some
of the significant events in this period of Australia's history?
Use the following questions to help you record details of the arrival
in Australia of the first members of your family.
Record your answers in your journal .
Consider sharing your family history in Expressions.
- From what countries did your ancestors or your immediate family
emigrate?
- Why did they choose to migrate to Australia?
What
method of travel was used for the journey? How long did the journey
take?
- Were any difficulties experienced by them during the journey?
- What possessions did they bring to Australia?
- How did relatives and friends who stayed behind in the home
country feel about members of the family emigrating?
- How was or is contact maintained with any family members or
friends still resident in the home country?
- Is the sharing of experiences with those still in the home country
seen as important by members of your family?
Look at the images and hear the voices of some of the people who
have made the journey to Australia from other countries and cultures.
What can you see in these faces?
What do their words evoke in you?
Conduct an interview with someone newly arrived in Australia.
Use the headings:
THE JOURNEY
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
A NEW LIFE
as a guide for the interview or use the list of questions you yourself
answered.
Discuss with the members of your class to determine similarities
and differences of your interviews.
Record your findings in your journal .
